SorryNotSora: OpenAI’s Newest Ace

‘Adolf Hitler surrenders to the Allies in-person, striking footage that led to the end of World War 2.’

Sounds a little weird? Obviously, nothing like that happened. The Nazi leader had committed suicide, he never surrendered. But what if there’s footage that’s so believable that it seems as if he did?

After all, we need to see to believe. History cannot be changed, but any visuals, however you want them to be, can be created with OpenAI’s Sora. You type a prompt, and it generates life-like videos that are almost too real. And when something like this is released for usage by the public, there are many implications.

Let’s learn more about Sora in this blog:

What is Sora?

Sora is OpenAI’s newest offering. It is a text-to-video AI generator that generates amazing footage based on prompts.

Sora’s website is enough to make you realize how capable the tool is. Videos that seem as if they’ve come out of a multimillion-dollar production film. Yes, even we as an advertising agency were amazed and had our jaws on the floor as we scrolled and scrolled and scrolled (still picking them up).

Without further ado, let’s know how it works:

But, how does it work?

Sora is trained on large datasets of video clips. It is AI, it learns through existing data to create things that have never been created before.

Through this, it learns patterns in motion, textures and lighting. The reason behind it being able to understand prompts lies in its ability for natural language processing. It converts prompts into instructions, and delivers visuals based on that.

Not only that, but once the visual is generated it is once again processed, adding realistic effects for the same.

It is available only in US markets, and you need to pay before you try it out.

How Sora will impact fields

Sora will change stuff. Big time.

Its impact will cause a ripple effect, and it will be no short of a revolution. That is if they make it widely available and free like ChatGPT. It currently isn’t available free of cost, who knows that this can change in the near future?

Now, let’s understand the impact that Sora may have on various fields:

Ads will never be the same

Why spend a fortune on shooting, editing and executing ads?

Generating them seems to be way easier and way cheaper. Sora’s presence will alter the course of ads forever. AI is not new to the advertising industry though, read our blog about how SRK and AI made an ad campaign a hit among the masses.

Obviously, longer ads will still require production, actors and all the works. But, for pocket-sized ads, AI will shine. TV ads, YouTube ads and everywhere where ads are between 5-30 seconds long. The situation right now is that you can generate videos, but can only do minor edits in it.

As AI gets better, it will also allow for generated videos to be edited in any way.

Social media will change forever

There’s a lot that goes into making reels and even animated reels.

But with Sora, all that will become easier to execute. Imagine just typing a couple of words, and you get the video that you want.

With brands speedily moving towards social media, Sora’s entry will make a world of difference. This includes the fact that videos engage more audiences but are harder to make. Sora will excel in bridging this gap, and making videos easier to make (even if they need editing).

All this will make a huge difference regarding what we consume as content, in more ways than one.

Blurring the line between what’s real and what’s fake

People believe too easily.

There’s a reason why propaganda works so well – it is the naiveness of us humans. And if it’s something like a video (visual), we tend to trust it blindly.

If you take a peek at Sora’s website, you’ll know how realistic it is. Some footages seem as if they’ve been taken straight out of a million-dollar production film, and some seem as if they’ve taken hours and hours to shoot.

Sora will surely blur the line between what’s real and what’s fake, who knows maybe we’ll have AI video detectors in the future!

Movies won’t be the same

Yes, even movies will change.

Though, full-length movies seem to be a far-out possibility – small scenes might be AI-generated.

As of now, you either shoot it or put a VFX team behind a scene (you’ll still need actors). But with Sora, that changes. You’ll just need a crisp prompt that gets you exactly what you need.

Filler scenes (short scenes) have a high probability of being replaced. This will impact the jobs of actors and actresses that act as extras. And again, people won’t be able to say if the scene is fake or real because AI is simply just that promising.

To think that Christopher Nolan planted 500 acres of corn just for a scene (he hates CGI) is amazing. But that’s just Nolan for you. Maybe even he’ll consider Sora because of how real it can get.

Sora will impact movies by replacing short scenes and can develop the capability for fully generating small films too.

Do we need to regulate Sora?

With something so big that promises so much, there has to be some sort of regulation. With great power comes great responsibility, and there’s no greater power than the power to influence.

Sora and other video-generating AIs come with the power to visualize. If we thought that deepfakes were an issue, then AIs with video-generation capabilities are a different ballgame altogether.

Misinformation can easily be spread, especially to instigate communities and spread propaganda. Just like we have AI detectors for content, there must also be detectors that can flag video-generated AI content.

There are many jobs that will be replaced. This includes animators, VFX artists, actors, and many more.

We will say this though – there’s a lot that still needs to be developed. These include an understanding of physics and how people actually move (Sora gets both these wrong a lot of times), mimicking human-like movements like movement of eyes and gestures of hands etc.

The bottom line

OpenAI has been leading AI development.

ChatGPT revolutionized many fields, DALL-E made strides in graphic design generation and now Sora – something that will change how we consume visual content forever. While it is still learning, it shows a lot of promise.

And AI has this one thing about itself – it picks up pace real fast (giving full credit to its developers). Let’s see how fast Sora develops into a near-perfect AI. We’re optimistic about what the future holds, and how Sora will make a difference in our lives.
